doesn't sniping defeat the purpose of rabbit? it's supposed to be about chasing down the rabbit, not putzing around on a distant hill taking potshots.
In a way, sure, but that's only assuming the sniper's being used for sitting and shooting.
I think the best question to ask with regards to the sniper in rabbit is
can the sniper be used tactically to improve one's score? - and I think the answer to that is
certainly. But attempting to improve your score while 'putzing around on a distant hill taking putshots' won't be very fruitful; it's difficult to carry the flag when it's on the opposite side of the map.
The more advantageous approach is to use chase-sniping, which has been employed fruitfully in rabbit (my best example is Unexistant, whom I've seen play using the sniper and place near the top). Furthermore, using the sniper in this manner is definitely more in the spirit of Legions, and attempts to use the sniper in rabbit the classical way will be meant with frustration and, consequently, abandonment.
While we're on the topic, I'd like to throw-out an old suggestion of mine for the sniper rifle that I think would be particularly appropriate for rabbit.

I think the best solution for the sniper rifle would be to revert to the old one, but with the inclusion of one significant difference: it would be impossible to charge the rifle while touching the ground. This would make o-sniping virtually impossible while forcing snipers to adapt to the move-and-shoot paradigm.
