A potential QUICK idea right off the bat:
Is it possible for users to make their own (simple) authentication system?
Such as (mirroring IRC) typing into chat "/authlegions 3lionz <passwordhere>" would change my name colour on the leaderboards, if correct.
(Just wanted to know if possible :p)

P.s. What happens if two people choose the same username?
Would one have to change or will a numbering system? ("playername", "playername(2)", playername(3)")

I wasn't thinking globally... that would defeat the purpose. I am thinking individual servers only such as "no-smurf" zones that require forum contact to get a server acc.
More dedicated players etc.
(It was more an idea than a serious suggestion.)

Wouldn't be worried about someone playing as you. Every server will have an owner who can take care of the people who does that. Losing reputation because of someone behaving bad and using your nick the same time isn't going to be an issue because people will notice that and beging to wonder if it's really you. In Tribes 1 there was smurf tracker which allowed anyone in the server view all the nicks certain player had used. Maybe you could have one of these on your own server if you're finding this so big issue.

These are minor issues when you think about the big picture which is that Legions is finaly going to be modable beond the boundries which limited modding at it's current state and people are able to host their own servers. Could you people stop thinking about only the negative sides of this instead of considering what these changes can possibly do the community. I can see new mods, some of them very popular and well done, some not so good, but still adding to the pool of choices people can do and enjoy different kind of experience of Legions rather just CTF and TDM. Maybe someone makes a good T1/T2 mod and we are finaly able to attract some of those grumpy Tribes vets. I'd be pleased to see some golden T1 maps remakes as some of them would work in Legions just fine.

We'll be updating our tools to deal with users who cause problems (example), banning them from official servers. Before we've been cautious with bans, but once these updates are out you can run your own server if you've been banned, so have fun!

But anyway, the alternative to all this is the status quo - and that's not great.

We could just leave the game as is, full of smurfs anyway because it's trivial to register accounts. You'll continue to have to beg us for private servers, because the game would remain locked to our servers only. Eventually our funds will run lower, and servers in Singapore/Japan will be turned off with no replacements for them, and nobody being able to run their own alternative. You won't be able to play any new maps, nobody will be able to tweak the game, all game modes will remain fairly static.

All this would be at jeopardy because you want your clan tags and nicknames to be preserved? I'm disappointed.

Heyhey, the fact that the few people posting here are being terribad pessimists doesn't mean that the general opinion is against this change.

Honestly, I think nobody will feel the change (ie. the lack of nicknames being bound to/owned by an individual). Legions isn't such a teamplay-intensive game after all. All that needs to be done in terms of teamplay in a PUB for it to be enjoyable is a few flag passes and a balance between the O and D, so playing with strangers (ie. not being absolutely certain who you're playing with) won't make the game any less enjoyable.
Heck, I can't see how nobody has yet noticed that this change will encourage more people to use Team Speak as they can easily identify each other in there by voice etc.

What is that anyway?

Inform me of the things that are not related to the gameplay that are more efficient and cool than clan tags.
Clan tags are not cool. It's just some yellow text slapped in front of your name. I would be more afraid of other people using your name to smurf rather than losing the useless yellow clan tag.

May I ask, is there a back up of legions with the old sniper rifle in it? If so I want a server with THAT on it.
