Alright, I've been meaning to bring up a discussion on this for a while now.

Why would you ever add the option of being able to choose whatever name you want? It's ridiculous, I'm seeing countless people smurfing as the devs, and much more *chocolate cookies* is happening.

I'm definitely not a fan of this new option, and I just want to see if anyone else agrees with me.

At least have some sort of option where you can't just smurf as someones name.

Hahahha :)

But serious, I haven't smurfed since this happened, (ask jordan) I would just like to know what else you guys think on this.

Personally, Seymour liked the authentication/team registration system. It was a feature that I really liked and was disappointed to see it go. With that said, it's probably best for the game that user hosted servers became possible and development on the game was made easier (which would've been quite difficult had the auth/team system remained.)

Sure, some will argue that Starsiege: Tribes never had a authentication system in place, but that game's really old and certain niceties such as nickname registration are appreciated.

Seymour still hopes that one day, some sort of nickname registration can be put into place.

Oddly enough Shaskie is one of the only people I haven't seen smurf. I understand it's advantageous for development but if there could be maybe a security thing where Dev names couldn't be used I think that would be ideal. I have seen GReaper with 80 ping to California quite a few times.

I saw someone smurfing as Jordahan. He had 70 ping in the EU servers and he was better than me, so I knew it probably wasn't Jordan.

On-topic:
Personally I'd love to see some sort of authentication system implemented in the future. I was disappointed to see this feature go.

Code:
live1/console.log:Got connect request from IP:REDACTED:60527 (ClientId: 90059, Name: bonnie)
live3/console.log:Got connect request from IP: IP:REDACTED:51831 (ClientId: 5575, Name: sahksha)

So, who is this bonnie from the same IP address? ;)

If my total meltdown mod becomes popular, I will most likely have server-side options for colored tags and player names. I will use the players IP: and NAME to assign a special colored tag or name.
Second option, add admin options to have players pick a long scrambled name, that would be used to set the players real name, that they want to use.
scambled name : et476gdvbvxx4567
real name : {Da}terminater

Make it so that player account name = in-game name. Shouldn't be too hard? I mean we do type a nickname into the launcher, just bring that one into the game and ta-dah.

Depending on how various server things go, LTS may eventually do this. If you and another person are connected to the same server and using LTS, it would verify whether or not someone was actually themselves or a smurf. That's a really long way off though as we haven't even released LTS yet. We'll release the client-only version long before this would occur though.

-LTS info sneak peak kinda uncertain thing.-
I second this statement, if someone does not do it first that is ;)
The question is, how. It will probably be a server side mod (as peer to peer checking is just stupid) but that would require people to have an incomplete system, as I doubt the devs will want to add a login system to the official servers now that this one is gone. That being said, it would be useful for finding out who is who and possibly tracking for modders.

If anyone does manage to develop it (if we don't), a few requests:
Make it simple and EASY to install. Otherwise people won't use it and it will be reasonably useless.

Make it easy to use, especially those new to the system, I personally don't want anyone coming in spamming "HOW DOES GET PURPL NAME??". Display SHORT instructions upon entering a game.
I.e. "Type /auth <username> <password> to sign into <loginservicename>"
"sign up by using /signup <username> <password> <confirmpassword>"
"Check ID by using /check <displayname>

Give the option of not using the service. Auto login when you detect an Ip that you already know is cool, but evil, And could cause problems if someone else plays from the same IP.

Make it easy for client and server mods alike to make use of your system. For example, using a "checklogin<nameofsystemhere>", Will return the currently signed in username.

Make it secure.
And kids, don't use the same password for legions forums etc. with an unofficial login service. That's just dumb.

If its already built, don't build it. The LAST thing we need are 5 different sign in services.

I'd love to see authentication being done as some sort of mod. If someone could do a decent implementation I could possibly add it into the official servers, although we wouldn't be able to distribute it through the launcher.

I agree with both blaze & Seymour.
Although I'm not too fussed with clan tags, and teams being terminated, I find it's always nice to be known by a unique nickname. The number of smurfs I have seen on EU servers in the past few days is disgusting, not to say there werent any smurfs when there were accounts, there were, but right now it's as thou the smurfs and trolls who seem hellbent on ruining games for others that enjoy playing the game have been given an easier option to just load the game, type in any nick, join server, voila!
Although I play many other games, I don't play them nearly as much in contrast to legions, i'd hate it if anything was to change that.
Seymour still hopes that one day, some sort of nickname registration can be put into place.
So do I.
