Regular crashes even with multiple drivers.

As suggested by Mabel I tried using some older drivers than the latest catalyst and Direct x

I went down to Ati driver 10.2 and Direct x 9 and the only thing that changed was the color of my crash screen :)

The thing is, I can play bioshock 2 and ME 2 on max settings at over 60 fps/1920 rez. no problems.

I dont over clock, have a kick ass i7 920/5870 gpu system and almost nothing else installed on a clean install of win7.

Can someone suggest a way I can trouble shoot the problem?

Something about either your windows install or your hardware is broken in some way. My bet's on the video card. Second guess is the CPU/Mobo, but that's much less likely.

hmm, the last 10 second freeze I got gave me a pop up window saying 'AMD driver stopped responding but has now recovered error'

guess I will have to re instal win7 without the service pack n see what happens
