Hi folks, Major Matt Mason here (named after my favorite toy when I was a kid, which seriously dates me but I digress). I'm a video/computer game junkie from way, way back - the original Pong, Mattel Football and Basketball, Atari Space Invaders, Star Trek on a mainframe using a teletype terminal and a real, honest to god phone modem (where you had to use an actually phone), Zork on a Timex Sinclair - been there done that.
Tribes 2 was the best game I ever played - and what I loved about this classic game was its simplicity and freedom. The complexity came from the player, the strategies and counters that led to success. In fact, a simple game where the complexity comes from the players, not imposed on them, is my ideal of game design. And Tribes 2 nailed it.
And the freedom - freedom of motion, freedom of load outs, freedom to do what ever the heck you thought was the best thing to do to deal with the current circumstances you were in as a team.
But mostly I loved the freedom of motion. The game physics. You weren't jumping - you were flying - and it was so visceral - it was so intense it took your breath away.
So let me get to my point. Tribes 2 was perfect once the initial bugs were ironed out. And what I would humbly suggest, to anyone that would listen, is that the game-play of Tribes 2 has no reason to be altered. All that it needed was updated graphics, a perpetually improved visual experience, to stay current with the latest tech. Chess doesn't need new rules, neither did Tribes 2.
I just downloaded and played around a bit in Legions Overdrive. I will give it time, do a bit of research and see what it offers. But here's the thing - I want Tribes 2 Redux - I want this franchise rebooted faithfully with no changes other than the quality of the graphics. Who's with me on this?
