LO 'failed' because players simply got bored of the game or found something else to play that is more fun/competitive. There are always assholes that bash and rage on new players in every game imo, have you played LOL, COD, DOTA? Now that *chocolate cookies* is toxic, the LO community was always welcome to new comers, and i have to say this was one of the best communities I've seen being where practically everyone knows one another. I for one had fun and will remember playing this game for a long while, looking forward to ' Z ' and hope it succeeds.

No steady stream of new players. Probably high demand skill wise. High TTK and not much stuff for new players to feel useful such as turret monkey position from Tribes 1 and 2. Basically every new player was thrown into fire(#9) and got destroyed by players who had played the game since IA. Guess some kind of a tutorial helping people figuring out the basic things you need to learn in order to actually do anything would've helped some. Other than that I can't think of anything else. I remember the time I was complete newb in Tribes1 and had problems to figure out which way to ski to be able to find enemy base. Always headed the wrong way and found myself skiing for ages until I found the boundaries of the map(which was actually pretty damn far away skiing out of bounds.) :D Point being is that I kept playing and observing better players and eventually I got better. Guess learning things from error and success isn't the way people like their soup these days.

Hey guys, been reading through this and PZ has come up a fair bit, anyone mind filling me in on what this actually is?
This game was and still is great, and it annoys me that its basically dead. I log on daily with the hopes of finding a game, and i see 1 player(well in mate whoever you are!) playing in the US serfvers and no one else. This game took a big hit after IA got shut down(i've been playing since the start), but that isn't really what killed it. We still had a relatively large community when L:O was introduced and for a long time afterwards. I kinda feel like that what killed it(correct me if i'm wrong) is when all the top tier players all moved out of PUBs, and just played PUG's. Those guys were the attraction in a server, you know, playing with the best 'n all. it encouraged competition and ensured nail-biting games that kept the rest of us Average Joes happy and coming back for more. I'm not saying it was just the fact that they kinda left, other factors ofc(Mainly IA shutting down - where iz my rockitball ;L), but its what killed it for me. Entering a lobby and me being the most skilled there wasn't that fun, not a challenge. Back in IA, and to some extent when we had that huge player base, the PUBs with like Coffee Addict, Eldermimmmi, Ajaxis, Twisted Demon, Helvian, Six Devil, Synista Jay, Propkid Petrified, Annihilate, Conting4ncy Plan, Jossiqua, Solid, Application Stefygraff, Dabb(*silly lady* :D) Fixious, 3lionz; to name but a few... the list was *dancing* endless! Those games were incredible, fun for the average joes, and fun for the top dogs because you all had a goal, which was to try and beat the greats in the lobby. The greats had players of the same skill level too so its not like they were bored. I won't forget the games on Nivosus, Moonshine, zenith Cauldron, Blade Run, Quarry even(not that good of a map) where it was a full lobby, 3-4 great players on each team, the rest Average, all playing CTF. Those were the *dancing* days.
Another big reason why this game kinda died was the high skill required to play competently as mentioned by Disci, completely agree with that!

I wanna see a revival in this game, i really do, and i hope that this project Z will do it, because a game with this potential deserves to be extremely well known and popular.
If someone could reply and tell me what this project Z is, i'd be eternally grateful
And hats off to the devs, did a damn fine job with the game after IA!

I've yet to play a videogame which comes close to the adrenaline rush of legions (maybe quake). It's a special little recipe of unique game dynamics which simulates an addictive sense of control. Jetpacks, skiing, shooting - all 3 simultaneously in an effort to sculpt a majestic presence in the frigid air of nivosus! Looking back, it's not hard to see why I jumped on this train or why I've been here so long :p

To this day, I still run legions.exe regularly in the false hope that servers are not empty. I'd like to believe I'm past any bitterness or nostalgia, but maybe not. There was nothing really fueling this game in the first place besides the naive dedication of teenagers. That's acceptable but now we are here, and it should be no surprise.

My only wish is that one day I will have the chance to land a mortar on disci's fat arse

THanks Fixious, very helpful indeed. Hopefully the finished product is good. Not too sure on the graphics though, kinda looks like TF to me...

I think taking AWAY content would bring players back... reset the game to like... Late 2012 somehow... x.o ...
Making it alittle less complex game-play wise... (just a suggestion)

Anndd.. The Generals 1 and 2 from western Canada, B.C, quit because the servers for the western side kindof... whent empty, died, and got shut down.
Now For the last year, the best ping'd servers on there have been 250-400s for anyone over here.

But nonetheless... Time marches on, and sometimes things dont keep up with it. =/

From what I've heard they're going for a style similar to Firefall, but I can't be certain.

This has been talked about before. Having a 'classic' server that is simply Legions from 2010 with only OD, rocket/chain/grenade, but also some stuff from the current version like demo recordings and other things. It's honestly not that difficult to create a classic mode as-is through a few server tweaks. But really there isn't anyone left who is dedicated to developing Legions.

It's pretty sad really. I see the servers, and they're always empty. There used to be at least five players, but I hardly ever see one now.

From your perspective Fixi, where do you think Legions: Overdrive is going to end up? Is there any possible way to get things running again, or is it too late?

I'm thinking of learning the games language to try and contribute to this community. I'd love to be able to develop server side mods one day. I also love the sound of bringing back the old. Was watching some videos, and I've got to say I like it how the game looked back in the day.

For example, this alpha video.

I really can't explain, but when I watch the videos, it seems like I'd really love to play the game. The high base on Nivo makes it more of a challenge too, instead of the same old.

I miss the old RL, recticles and being able to see our hands and feet. It's understandable that there is no way to get the old RL back, but re-creating something alike would be great. The game felt brilliant when it was on IA.

As I stated on the first page, no advertising and not be able to distribute the game elsewhere held it back and continues to do so. It's my understanding that if a ToS were to be written up and put into the game we'd be able to put it on something like Desura or at least a download link on IndieDB/ModDB (same owners of Desura). I brought up the idea of putting Legions on Desura back in March 2013 but it was decided it was better fit for for 'Legions 2' at the time, before any of us really knew what was going on (with both Legions' future and the next project). A very incomplete ToS was actually written and put into Legions ages ago and still exists on the Test build, along with other things like the Time Slam core, with the intent of getting Legions out there a bit more. But it ultimately fizzled away as people focused on other things.

As for the old RL (specialist?), it's still out there. The FE:L editor that a few of us still have (aka FELT) is essentially Legions from the IA period. It has the old Sniper with the charge-up reticles that light up, older maps like Quarry and Misty Mountain, being able to see your feet and hands, the wind sound while skiing, etc. It also looks better in some areas, particularly the skins in my opinion. I know Triad managed to download the oldest version of L:O a while ago, from 2010. He could do something with it if he were interested. But ideally someone needs to simply get the IP from IA and break free from their restrictions, which won't happen anytime soon. As it stands Legions is a lost - and dead- cause. I no longer play it, and neither does anyone else for that matter.

A while ago, I heard that the Devs were going to be able to distribute the game to steam. If this indeed was the case, how come it didn't happen? Steam would've been perfect for revitalizing the game (if of course this was ever going to happen)

Sounds like you might be referring to this blog post, which sort of details why they didn't go that route. To be honest I still don't quite understand a few things regarding the situation, but the past is the past.

I came out of lurking/a cycle of visiting anonymously every so often to say a little thing:

Though I may have not had the greatest thrills in my life here- mostly my fault, it certainly did provide thrills. Those moments where your hands are cold, your arms are shaking, holding the flag, and out of the blue a grenade MA's you before you touch the stand and you proceed to flip over every existing object and its mother within a one mile radius. Those were nice days. I haven't gotten to know most of the remaining people here on a personal level (or even on a superficial level) and I probably won't ever be able to, but I have to say that it's been alright. "It's been good and it's been real, but it hasn't been good real,"

I'll be keeping tabs on project Z though. :)

"only at the precipice do we evolve?" "only on the brink.. do we find the will to change!"

:S honestly the whole dynamics of legions is great, i love this game but the whole graphics thing is outdated, its not visually enticing and its extremely hard for new players to get the jist of the game before giving up. If this game was visually recreated, i think it would be a hit :p

I know a game that runs on the older TGA, that was heavily modified.
Even it looks much better than this game, witch runs on a modified and newer version of TGEA...
The graphics could be updated in the engine and are assets, but no one ever got to that part...
