How to compress videos?

I've been having some trouble uploading my videos because the file is too big (like the 500 MB a week limit on vimeo, etc. while the video will be 3 GB). So if you know any programs that will help compress a video, please link me :D because I tried uploading to youtube and it's only downloaded 33% in the last hour. Thanks.

Is your youtube account brand new? I swear there isn't a limit on size after your first upload or something.
What video editing software are you using?

The best codec for youtube is ' h.264 ' I think you can get windows movie maker to compress in this.

Edit: in quicktime format.

on your export you should be able to change the video size - change it from something like 1080p to 480p

when you ask a question in english, you start it with "how do i", not "how to". please teach this to all of your non-english friends so i stop having to read threads titled like this. if your first language is english, we don't want you on this planet anymore.

Most software like Fraps record and take up *chocolate cookies* loads of space on your hard drive. Some software like Bandicam compresses while recording, so it is a *chocolate cookies* load smaller (which can then be further compressed).

For compressing, just use windows movie maker, (cut the parts you don't want if you want to further reduce file size), Control P for export to my computer, and wait.

You are my idol.

For compressing your best bet, as said above, would be WMM or Vegas. I'm not sure if it may be of any use but there is also VirtualDub
What is the best format to compress to? I've been compressing my clips to .wmv however I've tested rendering in .m2ts and it looks a lot better with better colors so...I don't know...

mp4, wmv, or avi I would say. I have no clue what m2ts is. You can get great quality with most formats. You just need to get a better codec.

I actually have the same question but I need more detail:
Say I'm making a montage. Recorded with fraps, edited and put together with Adobe Premiere. Now how tha *dance* do I compress the video without a terribad quality loss (say I want the chat to be readable if it was L:O) and without having to leave the PC running for the whole night while it compresses/renders? It might sound logical to do all the editing in Premiere and then compress in Movie Maker, but god damn it Premiere takes AGES to render...

Use quicktime.. h.264 codec.. and set quality to like 95. Unless your computer is terrabad it should only take 10 mins top to render out. Also remember to set a audio codec.

Right, so render raw .avi video in premiere (ages), compress in quicktime. Though I've heard about this codec and searched for it before, but couldn't find a plugin/file/whatever for Premiere that allows me to render straight to h.264 (heard about such a thing, never found a DL link. In advance: using Premiere CS3 Pro).

Another question guys. How do I make fraps record 20-30 minute videos without breaking it up into 20, 1 minute videos. Ex. If I fraps a whole Legions game, it will appear as 15-20 videos that are all 1:30-2 minutes long. I don't usually stop fraps in game so it's not like I'm subconsciously hitting ` and pausing the video.

I've recorded with Fraps and the clips came out the length that I recorded for. Maybe it's your codec- only allowing a certain amount of time.
