Did you know companies hire people to do this? Good ones have people insinuate themselves into the community before they start plugging their clients *chocolate cookies*, only bots or terribad monkeys just come along register and start plugging stuff strait away.
I once created five different personalities and registered on forums to create arguments among myself to drum up interest in a clients work - the hilarious thing is if you are good (I am) then the communities themselves start talking about it and you can sit back and relax trolling out dissidents and occasionally leaking info. It's pretty fun stuff, but hard work at times - VPN tricks and IP fuckery are annoying but necessary.
So basically I spent three and a half years in the leejunz community just so I could eventually generate hype around whatever issue I'm paid for. It's all been a sham, sorry.
EDIT: Another funny story, a monkey I work with once ran between a bunch of inner city net-cafes making a discussion between various personalities to drum up interest in a popular movie you might have seen. He did this for five hours strait, because he thought the admins on the forum would see through his shenanigans and purge him unless he used different machines at different physical locations.
