For the people working in the gaming business.

I am looking for a game testing job to get my foot in the door. I think I would be very good at it and have fun doing work (I know it is not all fun and games...it is work I would take seriously).

I live in Austin, TX and currently can't find any entry level stuff. They all need 1+ years of game testing experience, I need to know someone already with his/her foot in the door, or I need to know code. I have been researching the job for a while and I read I could still get a job because of my experience with games (going on 17+ years now playing video games, and highly halo2 competition background with tournaments), but I am a little discouraged after a month of nothing but shut downs.

I read that game testing jobs open up mostly during summer to get ready for holiday sales, so hopefully I will be hired by then. If anything I might just go work at red lobster....*sigh*... not that it is a bad job... just not what I wanted. I believe in a difference between the people who endure work to do what they want for fun, and the people who if you told them to quit, they would look at you like you where crazy. They couldn't imagine doing anything else.

If anybody has tips/advice/contacts, help would be very much appreciated.

i dont have any tips or leads but i'd say take that red lobster job but never stop looking and researching, if this is what you love to do and want to do it do NOT give up...there's nothing wrong with having a steady job and income while working hard to get somewhere you want to be really badly, so good luck!!

It will suck the life out of you and make you hate games. Red lobster is a better alternative, it will only do one of those things. In all seriousness: if you want to get into game dev, start modding or writing or at least building your portfolio. Show the world that you are actually someone who can do something.

study well and hard, get into collage, companies will consider hiring you and add you to the top of the list whatever you applied to
don't screw up your life just because you want to start your life early in the gaming business
i really considered doing that but after lots of thinking and saw some people without any future because they started working before making it into collage i waited 2 years and the next few months will make me gain my seat in the gaming industry, gamepower7 is waiting for me to finish highschool
they loved my cv and called me to work for them but getting into collage is more important so in a couple of months i'll be working with them
if you start working before you finish highschool believe me you will not be as successful as working after

Hi buddy i'm just south of you in San Marcos, I am sure that you will get a testing job with your experience.

I am self teaching myself c++.

I want to join game testing just to get my foot in the door and start networking, if and I mean if, I enjoy it I will then make a career out of it. I plan to get an entry level job anywhere, but hoping for game testing. I will put myself through college with game development and then see where I go from there.

In my experience knowing c++ and learning it yourself are two different things.

I taught myself c++ to modify tribes 1&2, the end result is I'am only a modder. If you want to make it in the gaming business then go to school for it.
Being self taught at anything is a real turn off for any line of work you're looking to get into.

ohgawd that was depressing.
Lol it was wasn't it....

I do plan to go to school, just trying to self teach myself c++ for the code and debugging. If anything it can only help me right?

If I do get the entry levl testing, I am hopping to just get to see what everything is really made out of with my own eyes. Maybe game development or testing isnt for me, but I will be one more step to finding a career even if it is just knowing what not to choose.

To the person who cleaned my post up to help keep it on track, thank you.
