I also can't get anything to happen with gimp. I got the dds and all that. I can open the images, save it just fine, but as soon as I start a game the changes I made disappear and the weapon looks normal.

Set the changed files to read only. That should fix your problem

u have to use photoshop with dds exporter from nividia to save as dds... and it has to have alpha channel to work
