Keep in mind that the actual encoding/decoding/rendering processes in video editing software are more dependant on CPU power than graphic adapter.
In gameplay use the graphic adapter makes more noticetable difference.

4 GB is the upper limit 32-bit operating systems can utilize, maybe that's why you're aiming for 4 GB?

But you do have OS installation disks already? Buying a new OS easily costs around 100 - 160 € (not sure how much that is in pounds).
As a sidenote you shouldn't ignore hard-disk either, if you're planning on doing video editing you'll need loads of HD space (for me, recording 25 minute long Legions round with 1680 x 1050 resolution takes about 85 GBs).

I know that :p But I would still like to encode some video occasionally :)

Yarr, just seems the right number to me!

My sister goes to university so I can probably get windows 7 for free (and have done, as my sucky computer is running windows 7 professional 32-bit. I'll see if she can wing a 64-bit though. I wouldn't mind dual booting it with ubuntu either.

Sorry for the late reply as well!

Been looking at some stuff, and I still want to build my own. I have no idea where to start with the case and motherboard. Once I have those two though, I think I'm going to easily sort out everything else. Probably going to go for AMD and ATI build, can't really be *danced* with intel, and I won't need massive amounts of processing power. Only 1TB for hdd would do fine, but I'd need to have the option on the motherboard to add a slave. Going for windows 64-bit and upgrade ram later. Don't really need a disk drive that's new (rarely use one) and if its needed I can easily rip out the one from my computer atm.

Go for a dual core with a high clock speed. My laptop is 4 core but with only 1.73 ghz (though it overclocks itself). For gaming, the clock speed is more important than number of cores

Ok, here is the build list. I still want advice and feedback from this, and I'm still looking for a Power supply.

Estimated Build Cost (Includes PSU): £770
Actual Build Cost (Doesn't include PSU): £622.93

Optionals:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/268239 // 60 GB SSD

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/24-s...-hd-lcd-1920x1080-700001-300cd-m2-5ms-vga-dvi // 24" screen @ 1900*1080 resolution.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-RZ01-...1_1?ie=UTF8&s=computers&qid=1310922711&sr=8-1 // Razer mouse ;)

Which takes me to about a £960 mark.

The reason that the SSD is there is because the motherboard features Intel's Smart Response Technology which allows you to use the SSD as a 'cache' and offers near SSD speeds when booting and running programs. After the initial build, I have options in the future for speeding up the computer to try and 'future-proof' it. This involves overclocking the processor, adding another 6950 on a Xfire setup, adding more hard drive space, and getting two 8x2 RAM modules to take me to a grand total of 24 GB RAM. If I chose to buy a new monitor, the blu-ray will have to come with it. Decided to rip out my current optical drive and use that in the meanwhile.

Anyone know when 7-series for the Ati Radeon will be coming out? I'm on a tight budget at the moment, with only about £120 to spare on a graphic card, meaning that I will probably get a 6850. Whenever the 7-series comes, thinking of selling that card second hand, and buying the new 7-series.

not a clue..all i found were threads that its rumoured production date was in may and its out Q4 2011 which i would reckon was coming soon....but why go from 6850 to 7 series? mega fps rate?

Haven't got much of a budget now, and just want a super powerful card if possible, upgrading to 7-series makes sense then.

wouldnt it make abit more sense to wait a while for new series 7's are released making the ones your currently waiting for cheaper plus your 6850 wouldnt be that far behind making not so much diffrence to quality ect unless your monitor is HD?
