Clarify: sniping tactics

Every *dancing* day there is a new thread with someone complaining about OSnipers, or Frag Combos or Chainwhoring in the public games. Can we please just stop whining at the devs and the forums. It doesn't matter whose right about who osniped or didn't. Can we please get on with our short lives.
Maybe you should read.

inb4 'another whiny sniper hater': I'm actually genuinely interested in an intelligent discussion of sniper tactics beyond defense and chasing, not a flame war or a discussion of 'lawl t3h sniper is OPd and osnipers are t3h suxxorz.' Anyone attempting to flame or derail the thread will be promptly ignored.

Thanks to Ucan and Maus for sharing useful and intelligently presented information!

So it now sounds like "sweeping" covers all offensive sniping tactics that are not useless and noobish. Am I right in interpreting Ucan's explanation as meaning that bowl partying and midfielding are components of effective sweeping; that sweeping is a position more than a tactic or strategy?

And I agree with Maus that when you have a standoff which could last the rest of the game, a well placed sniper shot can be a godsend for everyone in the game (even if I scream about it anyway XD ).

So, while we're on the subject of how snipers can harass the enemy's offensive players, can we add some good counters people have found effective? As I've said before, I make a point of going after offensive snipers (though after this discussion it will be more for tactical reasons than "I hate osnipers"), but there are some, like Shaska, who are good shots and good duelers to boot and are able to kill me before I'm close enough to be effective (such as it is).

With weak duelers, I find it's enough to just camp their favorite spot. Tends to make the sniper whine, I've noticed. But with those that can knock you out of the air with CG in a couple seconds, like Lillith, it's a little more difficult. For me, I try to consider it enough that I can distract them from sniping, sometimes to the point that I don't even go for the kill; I just shoot em, dodge their shots, hide, and wait for them to try to snipe again so I can rinse, repeat.

I've also been wondering, has any team taken three snipers to a place where they can shoot the HoF and time a simultaneous shot on said HoF to just before the capper arrives, thus instagibbing the HoF and getting rid of those pesky body blocks and combo blocks? Seems a bit on the dirty side, but that could be effective.... Just wondering who else has had this idea and if it's been done.

I just ran a three-sniper defense in a pickup game with my team. It was hilarious. And yeah, bowlpartying and mid fielding are components of effective sweeping.

Sweeping is more than a tactic or strategy; it is a way of life. A religious belief. Something that you would carry in your purse for sentimental value.

Rl's do require skill cos u need to aim them... and to be able to MA people is difficult. I always switch to my CG when people fly up and GL and |RL for ground

That would be skypred :D

Well I didnt want to name names.....
For every tactic employed by the opposition there is a counter to it, if you get up close and personal with Hades he will chain you into oblivion. Dont fight to his strengths. You know who the snipers are, LOs should harass the hell out of them while cappers move in. It just takes team work, the big problem with PUBs. Its generally the seasoned veteran player that will cry about stuff the most when things dont go their way, let them cry.

RAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE.

nothing in this game will ever be as annoying as pubs where not a single person attempts to return flags during standoffs. in a 16 man server with 8 people on a team, there is never a need for 7 escorts for a capper and dueling LO when neither flag is home is pointless. snipers are fine. complain about the lack of people playing ctf instead.

Ok, since the links that I posted didn't cover the LR usage 'tactics' well enough I'll give a very simple breakdown of how do I play the Hornet, which is my main loadout.

So, you can play any basic position with the Hornet, be it D, O or even chase, though I wouldn't recommend capping with it. And as you are doing your job on your position...

Shoot anything and everything that is red on the IFF, is within your field of view and is far from it's respawn point or has your flag or is after your capper as long as you have enough of the blue stuff (fuel duh). /discussion ;P

It can't be that complicated...

If you are playing as the Sniper loadout it's basically the same, except LO is not recommended (lol @ outrider LO). Instead, if you are really skilled you are encouraged to take a spot in the midfield and support your team at all fronts. This means sniping the enemy cappers when they have your flag, sniping the enemy HoF/ defense whenever you want to distract them from your capper (ignore them whining about you O-sniping. Remember; sniping the enemy D shouldn't be done to kill them), sniping enemy LO/chase that are after your capper. If you are effective, you will be really useful by doing this. However, feel free to stick to defence if that's what you prefer as the Sniper.

Remember: there are no rules as to how should you play the game (well, except griefing and being naughty in general).

I'll make it less complicated: Shoot anything that's red.

In a way you're right. I wanted to post that at first but then I wanted to keep the intellectual level of discussion high humm*hummmm you know ;]

So yeah, come on! Basically unlimited range, hitscan rifle with heavy zoom at hand. What is there to discuss? :D

Theres more to a sniper than just "STAY IN MIDFIELD AND SHOOT EVRYDING." There are more variations of a sniper that can be discussed. Not everyone plays the same way, and Aki is asking how the members of the community each play the position.

So, while we're on the subject of how snipers can harass the enemy's offensive players, can we add some good counters people have found effective? As I've said before, I make a point of going after offensive snipers (though after this discussion it will be more for tactical reasons than "I hate osnipers"), but there are some, like Shaska, who are good shots and good duelers to boot and are able to kill me before I'm close enough to be effective (such as it is).

bah I just saw this. I tend to have an easy time picking off offensive snipers with my LR when I'm on defense. Perhaps trying to use hornet on defense will solve your problem. Other than that, hornets only have rockets and a sniper. Avoiding ground pounds and midair snipes is fairly easy for me while dueling a hornet offense. IF its an outrider, that makes it even easier. I usually stay on the ground, easily avoiding chain/snipes, and get him on the way down. If a sniper doesn't notice that you're near him, omnomnomnom

I dunno, distracting the sniper is an OK use of your time. You could certainly useful elsewhere, but if the sniper is constantly harassing your team, I guess that would work. I tend to have several people come out to me during a game. Sometimes in pairs.

I can sort of understand multiple escorts, but having 3 people going for midfield flag return (and leaving base wide open for llamas) is just ridiculous.

i would honestly rather have 7 o and no one escorting. at least then, there arent long boring actionless standoffs, even if you cant cap as a result.

I remember that day when it happened, it was quite the same on the other team, so anyone who went there just got slaughtered by 7 defense players.

I snipe when I get fairly bored. I'm shocked and suprised that I can hit moving targets (flag related) with 200 ping.
Zenith is a good example to work on, sine there is that massive building BARELY used. Also located in midfield, its a good place to camp out with Outrider or Raider LR loadout, since there is an ammo station on those buildings. Pewpew, get one or two shots at incoming or leaving players (also flag related); it ends up having a big role in later game.
(Think of it as traveling 1000 years into the past, killing 1 butterfly and you run a big risk of coming back 1000 years to find out butterflies are all extinct)
